The Epic Saga of Rollin' In Rhythm
The journey from thought to reality was an unbeatable experience.
Here’s the way it was.
All basic tracks were recorded at either Sun Studio in Memphis, TN with James
Lott and Matt Ross engineering, or Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL with
Ben Tanner engineering. Additional sessions were done at Taproot Audio Design,
Oxford, MS with Jeffrey Reed engineering. Jeffrey also mixed and mastered
the CD at Taproot.
North Mississippi, Memphis, and Muscle Shoals recordings:
Kevin Guyer - I played the rhythm guitar, sang my songs, played a little
bass, and I’ll take responsibility for the tambourine. Eddie Wood played drums
on all tracks and has been my partner in crime in this project from day one.
Amy Fisher played bass and is the real life Hudu Engineers' bassist. Daniel
Spears gave us his blues, ballad, and boogie piano sounds on a lot of this.
John Tate helped kick off this project playing bass at Sun - where he belongs.
Jonas King played bass on some of the earlier tracks. James Lott, our beloved
Sun engineer, put his indelible guitar mark on one song. Lisa Harrison sang
background vocals because we always let the redhead sing. Cecil Abels and
Wendell Haag, mi compadres from the Okratones, sang harmony everywhere they
saw fit.
Then there were the road trips:
New Hampshire overdubs were done at Dizzyland Recording, Somersworth, NH,
with Terry Palmer engineering. Mark Yacovone played the sweet swinging piano
and all organ parts. Dave Gerard gave us his classy guitar chops when we needed
to get funky. Mark Paquin dug down deep for the gutbucket R&B sax on a couple
of tunes.
Richmond, VA overdubs were done at Home Cookin’ Studios with Frank Coleman
engineering. Charles Arthur gave us piano, pedal steel, and electric guitar,
and remains my longtime brother-in-arms and favorite player among players.
Roger Carroll blew the jazzy film-noir sax and took it to Vegas for the rock
'n' roll stuff when we needed him to.
Dedicated to...
Narrowing the dedication down to three people is the best I can do. So this
is for my dad for getting me started, my wife Kerry for her unflagging love
and support, and the much-missed Ronnie Dawson, without whose inspiration
this album never would have happened. And thanks to all the musicians past
and present who have contributed some part to this…whether they knew it or
not. KG
